Julius Caesar: the military art at the service of politics
Resumo
This article aims to revisit the career of Gaius Julius Caesar, particularly
in political and military terms, and to understand whether this central character in
the late history of the Roman Republic was mainly a general or a politician. For this
purpose, it is recalled his intellectual and physical training, his first steps in the art
of war, his campaign in Gaul and the civil war that he disputed and won against the
Pompeian. It is also discussed the mastery of Caesar as a general, in order to understand
whether it can be considered an innovator in the field of military art, or rather
an ingenious performer of the old warlike formulas carried over from the Roman
tradition (Scipio, Mario, Sula). The conclusion is that for Julius Caesar, war was never
a goal in itself but a means to achieve his ambitious political purposes.
