Water games in Rome of the Caesars: violence, erudition and exoticism
Resumo
This study is focused on the most important Roman water spectacles, namely the naumachiae and other performances staged in the aquatic environment, in order to analyze their characteristics and the ideology underlying their production. Conceived as a form of propaganda for the interior and for the exterior, they appear as yet another inventive exaltation of the emperors’ power and of the protective and universalist mission of Rome.
