The construction of Olisipo theatre: the study of mortars and the engineering of this Roman monument
Resumo
The archaeological excavations carried out in this monument in recent
years, especially with regard to the south part of the theatre, area coinciding where
currently settles down the Roman Theatre Museum of Lisbon, allowed the discovery of new and relevant structures belonging to the theatre. These traces aid in interpretation
of what must have been the architectural surroundings of the building southern
scenic area. Facing south, with the backdrop of the Tagus River, the engineering
system implemented at the site, as evidenced by the powerful opus structures caementicium
that underpinned the building in the natural underground, attest for an ambitious
building program and a major investment both technically and economically.
In addition to the archaeological and architectural study, to verify if there was evidence
of one or more constructive moments, and to attest if the mortars used were similar in
the overthrown central part of the structures of the theatre and at the most recently
intervened southern part, a compositional study of these materials was made. The
results show chemical and mineralogical similarity and prove the use of mortars with
different textures, suitable for the different construction solutions, and confirming
the evidence of only one constructive moment, nonetheless possibly implemented in
several phases.
