Resumo: This article interconnects the semantic evolution of the word “republic” with that of “fatherland” [patria] and “virtue”, giving a brief overview of its historical mutations from Rome to the late 19th century, with the aim of illustrating some of its model re-enactments (American Revolution, French Revolution). At the same time, the aim is also to characterize the matrix in which Portuguese Republicanism, which achieved political victory on 5 October 1910, should be inscribed.; Articulando a evolução semântica do vocábulo “república” com a de “pátria” e “virtude”, pretende-se sintetizar as suas metamorfoses históricas desde Roma até aos fi nais do século XIX, tendo em vista ilustrar algumas das suas reactualizações modelares (Revolução americana, Revolução francesa). Como pano de fundo, visa-se, em simultâneo, caracterizar a matriz em que o republicanismo português, que sairá politicamente vitorioso em 5 de Outubro de 1910, deve ser inscrito.
