Valuation of the Mining Heritage of Regoufe and Rio de Frades Mines (Arouca Geopark. Portugal)
Resumo
In order to understand and highlight the importance of the mining
heritage of Regoufe and Rio de Frades mines (Arouca Geopark, Portugal) and justify the
geotouristic interest for a possible intervention to safeguard the remaining heritage, an
approach to the historical and socioeconomic aspects related to these mines was carried
out. In this sense, a review of previous work has been made, and information has been
collected from the files of the Direcção Regional de Economia do Norte. Is was also made
a small set of interviews with people who somehow have a past occupation linked to the
history of these mines, and a collection of old documents retrieved by locals who found and
kept this abandoned material. This characterization shows the importance and benefits
of possible recovery of part of these infrastructures, and of its preservation as a whole,
including the associated highly‑valuable intangible heritage. This reality allows the implementation
and affirmation of a reference geotourism, thus contributing to the sustainable
development of the Arouca Geopark territory.
