Resumo: Literary representations of science and medicine are long and very old procedures, in the contexts of literary creation. These representations shape certain images and figures of a strong social and psychological incidence (illness, health, the doctor, the patient, the power of medicine, etc.), and they are here considered according to a concrete sociocultural scenery: the second half of the nineteenth century. In the transition from romanticism to literary realism and from the scientific euphoria of naturalism to the scepticism of the end of the century, images and values change, following the scientific and social transformation of medicine and science in general, in its own register. The figure of the doctor will be the object of special attention here: an usual character in the naturalist novel, the figure of the doctor concentrates significant ideological and thematic elements; at the same time, he leads to judgements that reveal a certain imaginary of science, and particularly of medicine; As representações literárias da ciência e da medicina constituem procedimentos de longa e muito antiga elaboração, em contextos de criação literária. Modelando imagens e figuras de forte incidência social e psicológica (a doença, a saúde, o médico, o enfermo, o poder da medicina, etc.), essas representações são aqui consideradas em função de um concreto cenário sociocultural: o da segunda metade do século xix. Da passagem do romantismo ao realismo literário e da euforia científica do naturalismo ao cepticismo finissecular, transitam imagens e valorações que acompanham, em registo próprio, o devir científico e social da ciência e da medicina. A figura do médico será aqui objecto de atenção especial: personagem frequente no romance naturalista, a figura do médico concentra elementos temáticos e ideológicos significativos; ao mesmo tempo, ele suscita juízos em que se projecta um certo imaginário da ciência e, em particular, da medicina
