The major themes of The International Year of Planet Earth in Geology text-books for the 10th and 11th century grades of the Secondary Educations in Portugal
Resumo
The present work describes the presence and representation of the themes included
in the Scientific Programme of the International Year of Planet Earth (2007‑2009)
in eight Geology text‑books for the 10th and 11th grades of the secondary education in Portugal.
The results show that all the analyzed textbooks address the 10 subject matters included
in the IYPE Science Program: “Groundwater – towards sustainable use”; “Hazards – minimizing
risk, maximizing awareness”; “Earth & Health – building a safer environment”;
“Climate – the ‘stone tape’”; “Resource issues – towards sustainable use”; “Megacities – going
deeper, building safer”; “Deep Earth – from crust to core”; “Ocean – abyss of time”; “Soil
– Earth’s living skin”; “Earth & Life – the origins of diversity”. However, this approach does
not have the same representation in the analyzed eight books: “Deep Earth – from crust to core”
and “Ocean – abyss of time” are the most represented themes, while “Megacities: going deeper,
building safer” is the less represented.
Given the crucial role that textbooks play in educational practices, the presence and
representation of those themes – which reflect the organization of the syllabus approved by the
Portuguese Ministry of Education for the Geology component for the 10th and 11th grades
of the secondary education – allow to emphasize their value as a resource to promote a better
integration of Earth sciences in the curricula of different education systems, particularly those
included in the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, a major goal of the Outreach
Programme of the IYPE.
contempladas no Programa Científico do AIPT – Ano Internacional do Planeta
temáticas incluídas no Programa Científico do AIPT: “Água Subterrânea: reservatório
climáticas: registos nas rochas”; “Recursos: a caminho de um uso sustentável”;
“Megacidades: o nosso futuro global”; “O interior da Terra: da crusta ao núcleo”;
“Oceano: abismo do tempo”; “Solo: a pele da Terra”; “Terra e vida: as origens da
diversidade”.
global” é a menos representada.
AIPT.
